Welcome to Orlando Weekly's "Band of the Week." Every week, we highlight one of our favorite local bands. This week, we're pleased to bring you The Palmettes.

The Palmettes are playing Wally's on June 29.

Just the facts:

Who's in the band?
Edward Thomas Murtaugh - Bass/Guitar/Vocals
Jana Mays - Ukelele/Vocals
Alex Goldman - Drums
Alexis Bea - Bass/Guitar/Vocals

When did the band form?
Originally we formed around 2013 but we had a mostly different lineup. After a little hiatus, the four of us started playing together; it’s been a little over a year now.

Currently available releases:
We have a couple songs on bandcamp with the new lineup and will be releasing a cassette hopefully at our next show!

Describe your sound in five words:
garage pop doo slop rock

Five questions:

What has been your most memorable show so far?
That one show that we played at Will’s was amazing, so many memories from that night ;).

Which local band is your favorite one to play a show with?
It’s difficult to pick just one but we really love the Sh-Booms, Woolly Bushmen and Wet Nurse. They always put on a good show and they all have GREAT hair.

What description gets used for your band that you would most
like to correct people on? Why?
That we’re a beach band or a “girl” band. We live in Orlando, pretty much the least beachy city in Florida. We are not a girl band because two of us are boys and we just don’t like the term “girl band,” because it really doesn’t describe our sound…

What’s your favorite thing about being an Orlando band? What's your least favorite? Why?
Orlando is #1, we party the hardest. It’s a pretty tight-knit community and is open to and supportive of all different kinds of art and music. On the downside, It’s so damn hot and there are no basements to practice in. Oh, and there are rarely house shows…which brings us back to the no basements point.

Any big news to share?
We’re expecting!!!!!
…to release the cassette along with a music video and will soon be recording an LP.
