Reunited thrash pioneers Destruction kick off the week at the Haven

Alongside similarly heavy-minded Euro fiends like Sodom and Venom, Germany’s Destruction were part of a proto-thrash vanguard that both inspired and mirrored what was happening on America’s West (Metallica, Slayer) and East (Anthrax, Nuclear Assault) coasts. And it was Destruction who were true inheritors of the trashy leather-encased excellence of a Motörhead, a Mercyful Fate or a Judas Priest. Led by a hulking maniac named Schmier (not even fucking around), Destruction exploded right out of the gate with instant classic Infernal Overkill, a lethal mix of trashy excess, furious speed and lethal melodic chops, quickly – there was no other way with this band – followed by Eternal Devastation and Mad Butcher. In 1989, the dreaded “creative differences” led to Schmier leaving the band for a decade, but when he rejoined, Destruction began firing on all cylinders again, rightly hailed as elder statesmen of metal. This rare stateside jaunt should feature a setlist packed with the classics, as the group is currently working on an album of re-recordings of older material. Frenzy will ensue.
