Massive brawl breaks out at Florida airport after Spirit Airlines cancels flights

Posted By on Tue, May 9, 2017 at 11:04 AM

Chaos ensued at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Monday night after frustrated passengers were told that nine flights with Spirit Airlines were canceled.

Cellphone footage shows customers clashing with Spirit Airline employees and deputies from the Broward Sheriff's Office trying to maintain order. According to WVSN, several passengers were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

"All of a sudden, one particular flight got canceled, and a mob ensued up here at the front counter, in front of everyone else who had been waiting in line," a passenger told the station.

The flight cancellations were reportedly over a labor dispute between Spirit Airlines and Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPI). In a statement Spirit blames the pilots for the chaos.

"This is a result of unlawful labor activity by some Spirit pilots designed to disrupt Spirit operations for our customers, by canceling multiple flights across our network," said Spirit spokesman Paul Berry. "These pilots have put their quest for a new contract ahead of getting customers to their destinations and the safety of their fellow Spirit Team Members."

So far, there have been nearly 300 flight cancellations with Spirit this week, reports CNN.
