Welcome to Orlando Weekly's "Band of the Week." Every week, we highlight one of our favorite local bands. This week, we're pleased to bring you Boy Without Batteries.

Boy Without Batteries is playing Will's Pub on May 19.

Just the facts:

Who's in the band?
I'm Cole Jaques and I write and perform music on a Nintendo Game Boy.

When did the band form?
I started writing music in 2011, but I didn't consider myself an official act until 2013.

Currently available releases:
My latest release is an album titled Young which came out at the end of 2015. I also have an EP titled The Digital Age which came out in 2013.

Describe your sound in five words:
Thoughtful, high-energy Game Boy music

Five questions:

What has been your most memorable show so far?
Freq Fest 5 in L.A. It was my first time heading to L.A. and I got to see some of my favorite chiptune performers live.

Which local band is your favorite one to play a show with?
Melt Channel. I've been a huge fan since before I was releasing music and they blend my two favorite genres: Chiptune and Pop Punk.

What description gets used for your band that you would most
like to correct people on? Why?
I often get lumped with nerd music and nerd culture, but I don't feel like that description fits me and what I do. Yes, my instrument is a Game Boy, but the video game association ends there for me. My music is more about pushing the Game Boy's sound capabilities to its limits than it is for 8-bit aesthetic.

What’s your favorite thing about being an Orlando band? What's your least favorite? Why?
Favorite: The people here are really open minded and friendly.
Least Favorite: I just about always play nerd events here. I'd like to move on from that and play more punk and electronic shows.

Any big news to share?
New music is in the works :)
