There's a monkey on the loose in Apopka right now

Posted By on Mon, Apr 24, 2017 at 1:13 PM

Florida Fish and Wildlife officers are searching for a monkey on the loose in Apopka.

Images of the monkey, which appears to be a rhesus macaque, were sent to WFTV's Lauren Seabrook over the weekend, and were reportedly taken near Central and Michael Gladden Boulevard.

The monkey could be a missing pet, but a more likely scenario is that it came from Silver Springs State Park in Ocala, where hundreds of feral monkeys currently live.

University of Florida biologists believe the monkey population in Silver Springs is growing, and sightings have been documented as far as Lady Lake and The Villages in Lake County, about 30 miles away from Silver Springs.

Anyone who spots the Apopka monkey is urged to not approach it, and immediately contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922.
