Local officials plan to commemorate June 12 with 'Orlando United Day'

In a little more than three months, it will have been a year since a gunman at the gay nightclub Pulse took 49 lives during Latin night and rocked the City of Orlando to its core. On June 12, we honor the victims, the survivors and the families, but it's also a chance to remember the many kind acts that happened that day.

To pay tribute to the 49 people lost at Pulse and recognize the displays of love that happened after the massacre, local city and county officials have declared June 12, 2017 as "Orlando United Day – A Day of Love and Kindness." The City of Orlando, Orange County government and the owners of Pulse have worked to put together a series of events that day to come together as a community.

"Orlando Mayor Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jacobs are encouraging residents and businesses both locally and around the world to join with others in acts of love and kindness to continue the unity that followed the tragedy," a press release for the event says. The events on June 12 so far include:

- One Orlando Collection and Digital Gallery at the Orange County Regional History Center: Images and items collected at Pulse memorial sites around the city will be displayed, as well as community artwork and international commemorations. Admission to the History Center will be free. This event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

- Unveiling of Sea-to-Sea Flag at the Orange County Administration Center: This event starts at 10:30 a.m. A section of a giant rainbow flag that was originally displayed on June 17, 2016, makes its return to the county building under the request of Mayor Jacobs. Known as "The Sacred Cloth," the flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ movement.

- Reflections and Remembrance at Pulse: From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the community is welcomed at the gay nightclub on 1912 S. Orange Ave. for a ceremony that includes reading the 49 names of the victims, a wreath display and a musical performance by Violectric. From 10 p.m. to midnight, the community is again invited to the nightclub for final prayers and reflections.

- "Orlando Love: Remembering Our Angels" event at the Walt Disney Amphitheater at Lake Eola Park: Starting at 7 p.m., local officials, such as Mayor Dyer, Mayor Jacobs and Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan will hold a remembrance ceremony at Lake Eola. There will also be musical performances from Olga Tañón and Sisaundra Lewis, and the names of the 49 victims will be read.
