RIP Merle Haggard (1937-2016)

In a sad twist that wouldn't be out of place in one of his own songs, country music titan Merle Haggard has passed away due to complications from pneumonia on his 79th birthday. One of THE seminal figures in country music, whether you know him from "Okie From Muskogee," "If We Make It Through December," duets with Willie Nelson, the Kennedy Center Honors, tours with Bob Dylan, or one of hundreds of gorgeously sad ruminations on the usually shitty nature of life and love, Haggard was a musical force, singing and performing up until the very end, his deep, rich voice untouched by age. Right now I'm hearing his voice and winding out from nearby offices, somehow sounding better than ever...
