Marco Rubio tries to keep delegates in effort to stop Donald Trump

For everyone who thought U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio was done with the circus that’s become the 2016 presidential race, think again.

NBC News reports the junior Florida senator is asking 21 Republican state parties to stop from releasing the 172 delegates he won during his presidential campaign, which was suspended after the humiliating loss of his home state to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. CNN reports the strategy is “designed to deny Trump from winning the nomination on the convention's first ballot and assist rival Ted Cruz.”

Rubio wrote a letter to the chairman of the Alaska Republican Party, saying “It is my desire at this time that the delegates allocated to me by your rules remain bound to vote for me on at least the first nominating ballot at the National Convention.”

Rubio’s aide told MSNBC that although Rubio is out of the race, he “wants to give voters a chance to stop Trump.”

The Republican presidential nominee needs to win 1,237 delegate before the Republican National Convention in July.
