Mehmet Gurkaynak, one of the two Mehmets that ran Shish.Co Mezze & Grill, has left the Turkish kebaberia to open Park Cafe & Bakery, in the former Extract Juice Bar space, in Hannibal Square.

"I was doing some work at Venture Photography next door and always had my eye on this place," says Gurkaynak. "When it was vacated, I jumped at the opportunity."

Gurkaynak sold his interest in Shish.Co to Mehmet Tanriver and has partnered with fellow Turk Figen Ozdemir to open what he describes as a "Mediterranean bakery."

Borek (stuffed phyllo dough pastries) are baked on-site, as are most of the baked goods, with the exception of Turkish bagels (simit), which are brought in from New York. Click here to see their full menu.

For the moment, Gurkaynak says Park Cafe & Bakery will open for breakfast and lunch only as "Hannibal Square is dead after 6 p.m."

That said, he is in the process of getting his beer and wine license and will soon have happy hour events at the cafe.
