Orlando City Commission voted Monday to approve the purchase of Constitution Green Park and the giant oak tree that sits on the 1.87-acre property.

The city agreed to pay the current owners $3.34 million in cash from the city's Community Redevelopment Agency, and a bank property on Gore Street valued at about $2.5 million. Downtown residents created an uproar last year when they learned the family who had leased Constitution Green Park to the city since the 1980s was thinking of developing the park into apartments. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer says the city is contemplating adding a dog run to Constitution Green.

"It's not very often we get to do something this special and preserve something for generations to come," says District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan.

Commissioners also approved a deal on Monday selling 11.8 acres of city land in Parramore to the Orlando City Soccer Club for almost $18 million. The club plans to build a $155 million stadium on the land by 2017.
