Forget that elbow room, Florida. The U.S. Census Bureau reported Tuesday that the state's population surpassed 20 million people for the first time, at exactly 20,271,272 residents, earlier this summer.

Florida is the third most populous state after California, with a population of 39.1 million, and Texas, with a population of 27.5 million. Two years ago, Florida overtook New York, which has a current  population of 19.8 million.

The Census also reports that Florida added more people than California for the first time in a decade, gaining 365,703 new residents. Puerto Rico's financial crisis, which led an exodus of people to leave the U.S. commonwealth and move to the mainland, especially Central Florida, had a population decline of 1.7 percent.
