The $400 million Daytona Speedway facelift is going to be ridiculous

Daytona Rising
, part of the larger redo of the International Speedway and surrounding area, just took one big leap forward with the installation of the new signage.

Anyone who’s visited Daytona Beach knows the old Daytona International Speedway sign due to its sheer size. The new sign will dwarf that old one. Each letter of DAYTONA is 13 ft. 6 in. with the SPEEDWAY letters a bit shorter. Altogether the new sign will stretch 355 feet. The new letters are LED-lit and will change based on the events at the speedway.

The new signage is part of the $400 million Daytona Rising project. Other aspects of the project include a new solar panel shaded pavilion and new wider, more comfortable seating. The panels for that $7 million pavilion are now arriving on site. Other rumored additions include an entrance featuring a truck pulling a life-size model of the space shuttle. All together when the remodel is done the speedway will have 60 luxury suites and 101,000 permanent seats.

The 2016 Rolex 24 (Jan 30-31) and Daytona 500 (Feb 21) will be the first major events at the finished speedway.

Construction in the area won’t be finished by then as the 181-acre One Daytona mixed-use development across the street is still in the midst of a multi-year construction plan. One Daytona is linked directly to the speedway with a newly improved, elevated pedestrian bridge. The mixed used development is estimated to cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars and is being developed by the International Speedway Corp., the parent company of the Daytona International Speedway.

Florida-based Prime Group was recently selected to oversee the residential aspects of One Daytona. A 250 unit apartment complex is currently being planned. The apartments will be split between a 4-story, midrise section on the east side of the development and a “garden-style” section near the Cobb Theatres.

One Daytona also will feature a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel that is also being developed by Prime Group. Other aspects of the mixed-use development include a Bass Pro Shop, a 12-screen Cobb Theatre and an outdoor events space. Phase 1 is expected to open in 2017.
