After fighting to keep Florida's black bears from being hunted, Speak Up Wekiva's director Chuck O'Neal wants to run for Florida Legislature.

Speak Up Wekiva and O'Neal sued the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission in an effort to stop the hunt, but were unsuccessful in convincing a Florida circuit judge accept a temporary injunction to stop the hunt in October.

The Orlando Political Observer reports O'Neal, who is also first vice president of the Florida State League of Women Voters, made the announcement he would be running for Florida House District 29 at a memorial for the 298 bears killed last weekend. O'Neal, a Democrat, will be campaigning in the district currently represented by Scott Plakon, R-Longwood.

"My hope is to get into the legislature and bring it back to reality to accept the fact that we are a democracy and they need to respect the will of the people," O'Neal says.
