Jim and Silvia Lakey are no strangers to the local business scene – they own Gallery on the Edge, they have a Cuban café next door in the works, they have plans for a new farmers market for College Park, and they launch their newest venture, The Shoppes of College Park, this weekend.

Jim, originally from Michigan, and Silvia, originally from Cuba, have called Central Florida home for more than 20 years and have been busy putting down serious entrepreneurial roots in College Park.

The Shoppes of College Park occupies the old space where Annabelle Hart home decor and gift shop once was. Locals will be happy to know that they will be able to purchase goods not only from Annabelle Hart, but 10 other local designers and artisans.

Shoppers can purchase trendy Edison lightbulbs, as well as clothes and accessories from Chatham Blue, Blue Betty Vintage and Jadelynn Brooke. If you are looking for home décor and vintage pieces, Summerhaus* Home Décor has a beautiful spot upon entering the Shoppes right next to Pistil Events, which has a variety of plants and succulents they can arrange for you. Classes will also be held with Pistil to help customers learn to outfit their arrangements and centerpieces for gatherings and parties.

Gifts for all occasions can be found here, as well as more essential items like Caldrea’s line of aromatherapeutic home and body-care products. There will also be monogramming services available for items purchased in the shop or for items customers bring in from home.

The transition is seamless as you visit each vendor’s area; it feels much more like a local boutique with a variety of different items for different tastes.

Jim Lakey spoke of the variety as being an advantage to this business model. “It’s like having 11 businesses in one," he says. "Each booth brings its own creativity that can appeal to different consumers. It represents different cultures and even different monetary ranges, so there is something for everyone.”

The grand opening is this Saturday, Aug. 29. Summer hours will be Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and beginning in October, hours will change to Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. with additional hours closer to the holiday season.
