After saving Robert Merritt's life from a fire that consumed his home earlier this morning, Orlando Police officers have now charged him with arson and attempted murder.

Officers were dispatched around 5 a.m. to check the well being of a person at 2409 Betty St. When they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the house and a 6-year-old girl standing at the front bedroom window trying to get air from an opening.

Officers broke the window to rescue the girl and found inside the house Merritt, 49, who was not conscious or breathing, and a dog.

The Orlando Fire Department put out the fire while the girl was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Merritt was last reported to be in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center, OPD says.
