Fringe 2015 review: "Messages"

Messages by Zeta Dance Group is a short program of dance stories inspired by the different messages we get in our daily lives and how each of us interprets those messages.

At the beginning of the performance, director Erin Tunbridge invited the audience to reach under their seats to find a message. She encouraged us to look for our message in the performance and explained that each message connects to one of the pieces that we would see. I liked this creative way of inviting the audience to engage in the performance without forcing awkward audience participation.

The show started out with a series of overlapping solos that evolved into duets, and ended in an ensemble piece that interwove each dancer's movement story with the others. The accompanying audio was an interesting series of layered stories which created a frenetic effect. Engaging choreography filled the program and the dancers worked well within the limited space of the Red venue.

This production was very good, but not long enough. At just under half an hour, I was left wanting more.
