Fringe 2015 review: "Massage a Trois"

Themes of love triangles, body issues and the crazy things people do for love abound in John Connon’s hilariously quirky trio of one-acts. “Massage a Trois,” written and directed by Connon, stars Fringe vets Brett Waldon, Angela Trapp, and Janine Klein (May 15 through May 19) with Joy Kigin (May 22 through May 24) as they explore the complexities of modern relationships and self-acceptance in the face of doubt through increasingly absurd circumstances.

The show opens to the bustling beeps of Whole Foods checkout lines, with Klein’s character wiping down her five-minute massage chair. Her first customers, a yuppie couple in the midst of an argument, decide the perfect thing to relieve their stress is a supermarket massage. However, once the female client slips on her headphones of soothing massage music, her boyfriend turns to the masseuse and declares, “I can’t stop thinking about you and this was the only way I could think of for us to have some time alone!” Such is the surprise folly of Connon's characters, who try to navigate their conflicted feelings without tipping off the third wheel. And this is just the first of three progressively awkward situations in which the actors find themselves.

The second scene, titled “Cheat Meal,” follows Waldon and Trapp on a first date awkwardly trying to decide what to order. It all seems normal until Klein shows up out of the blue accusing Trapp of cheating … on her diet. The final scene, “Ambush,” finds the characters trapped in a reality TV show that’s a cross between a hostage situation and a celebrity makeover. The audience at the performance I attended rolled with laughter as the captives were transformed from frump to glam against their will.

Don’t miss this mashup of characters in conflict with culture and political correctness.
