Worth the Drive: Parquet Courts in Gainesville

Posted By on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 10:46 AM

One of the most exciting current bands of the past three years, Parquet Courts hasn't made it to Florida yet, but they're changing that tomorrow when they play the Wooly in Gainesville with a rare opening set from rad Tampa band Merchandise, to boot. (RSVP!) So if they snared you with their cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" on last year's near-perfect album Content Nausea - which shifted the band's sound impressively away from the nagging Pavement comparisons they suffered through during the critical run on Light Up Gold + Tally All the Things That You Broke (instead, folks are currently comparing them to quirky rock legends Devo, so we'll see where they go next; they feel consistently misunderstood as critics attempt to pin down their original sound). We chose their other release last year, Sunbathing Animal, as essential listening on our end-of-year list, and we were definitely not alone.

If you're on the fence about making the trip, check out their KEXP live performance from last August, because it is more convincing than I could ever be (I will say when I saw them open for the Breeders at the Bowery, the floor shook and my devoted fandom was sealed):
