We hope 'Clare and the Chocolate Nutcracker' is as delicious as it sounds

Posted By on Wed, Nov 26, 2014 at 10:32 AM

At first glance, yes, this sounds like a Todrick Hall Christmas Special, but don’t worry; it isn’t yet another drop in the ocean that is the seasonal onslaught of Nutcracker performances – this one is different. It was penned as an adaptation of the classical ballet by Beverly Page, the president and CEO of Orlando Community Arts, and this year features a guest appearance by Savion Glover, the dance prodigy and tap virtuoso himself. Follow the main character, Clare, as she travels with the Chocolate (yes, black) Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy on an adventure through various cultures and lands that copy the cultural miasma that is Central Florida. Traditional ballet gives way to step, jazz, modern, swing, gospel and hip-hop in this original production at the freshly opened Dr. Phillips Center.

3 p.m., 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 | Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 455 S. Magnolia Ave. | 407-403-5519 | | $27.10-$45.55
