False advertising: Mailer tries to tie Obama to county charter questions

Well, here's an interesting flyer that came in the mail yesterday (I got it at my house) from the Orange County Republican Party. It attempts to connect County Charter Amendments C and D – which relate to whether the county should have to tell voters what party affiliation their county commission members pledge allegiance to and whether there should be term limits on "county constitutional officers," aka the County Tax  Collector – to Obama. Apparently, according to this mailer, if you don't vote No on C and Yes on D, you're letting Obama win. Because he apparently hates term limits and nonpartisan elections, apparently? We're not sure. Because really, neither of these things has anything to do with Obama or national politics. What they really relate to are internecine squabbles that a bunch of local Republicans have with anyone who's not on their side – Question C is actually an attempt to squash a citizens initiative that made to to the ballot via petition (in other words, people signed petitions ASKING for it to be on the ballot) and Question D is, basically, one grumpy county commissioner's horrible, no good, very bad day, in which he attempted to shift the balance of power in the county (See: Total Brummer).

Does it have to do with the policies of Obama? No.

Does it have to do with the president's economic accomplishments? No.

Will putting a photo of Obama on a mailer and making a weak argument that these elections are a referendum on his administration convince some people to vote the way the party suggests? Sadly, it probably will.
