French actor-singer Soko is touring as direct support to Foster the People (whose Orlando show was Oct. 18 at Hard Rock Live) but is doing some off dates in small rooms. Any time the words “actor” and “music” intersect, reaction – driven by empirical history – usually ranges from eye rolls to outright laughter. But Soko’s very indie reputation for enigma and whim made her Orlando stage debut (Oct. 14, Peacock Room) a reasonable prospect. Turns out, she and her full band of international players were pretty good in a fairly conventional and put-together way, performing a diverse set that featured some scruffy bounce and sturdy, pop-competent indie rock alongside her stripped and plaintive stuff.

The only truly unusual parts came via Soko’s between-song talk, near soliloquys that were streams of consciousness quivering with charm, neurosis and sometimes astonishing vulnerability. Pardon the assumption given her other vocation, but it was either really real or great acting. And if it’s the latter then we all need to start watching her films en masse and tout de suite.

Watching her, it’s natural to see why Soko would be doing side dates in up-close venues. It’s a setting where her weird, intimate presence can translate and flourish more fully. At this particular show, it was where she could clearly see a fan in the crowd who was singing along, zero in on her, bring her onstage and dance with her. And it was cool as shit.
