Beyond the sweltering heat and giant flying insects, kids in Central Florida (and around the country) experience a different kind of summer vacation, where their next meal is a big question mark. During the school year, kids from low-income families rely on breakfast and lunch for most of their nutrition, but when the bell rings on the last day of school, uncertainty sets in.

According to No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to relieving and eliminating childhood hunger, 21 million American kids rely on free and reduced-price lunches during the school year, but only 3 million kids get free meals during the summer.

No Kid Hungry is trying to change that with a web-based and SMS text tool that lets parents search within their zip code for community-based organizations and emergency food providers to put healthy food on the table for their kids during the summer months. Just within 25 miles of downtown, there are 209 results, so, to paraphrase Fox Mulder, the food is out there.

Wanna help?

Any excuse to share some brews and cook over open flame is good enough for us, but if it helps hungry kids this summer, even better. Host a barbecue for family and friends to raise awareness and collect donations for No Kid Hungry instead of (or along with!) 6-packs. Donate proceeds at
