Fringe Review: Obsessively Okay

Posted By on Fri, May 17, 2013 at 11:58 AM

If you've ever known (or been) someone who can't leave the house without checking the stove a dozen times, you know obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is no laughing matter. But Audrey Kearns (co-founder of Discount Comedy Outlet and 4 Truths and a Lie) demonstrates with her autobiographical one-woman show Obsessively Okay that crippling neurosis can be hilarious as well as heartbreaking.

Clinically diagnosed 3 years ago following an embarassing discovery in her ob/gyn's office, Kearns recounts her attempts to deny her illness with the help of the all-knowing Internet. She traces her self-harming behavior patterns back to Catholic school, when she became enthralled with the familiar ritual of the Mass as an escape from daily anxiety. That dependence transfered later to her love of science fiction, whose drama and pagentry makes it like Catholicism "with none of the guilt and 1000 percent more space fights." Warm memories of wearing Vulcan ears at Megacon '99 twist into a nightmare of fear and self-loathing, forcing her to finally face the fact that her OCD is like the Borg: resistance is futile.

Obsessively Okay is intensely personal, but Kearn's self-depreciating wit and wacky sound effects (as directed by husband Brian Bradley) make the show much more palatable than your average one-actor confessional. And when she finally learns to slay (or at least side-step) her psychological dragons, you'll feel your inner Warrior Princess cheer -- at least mine did.

Note: This review is based on a preview performance that the press was invited to attend.
