This show features so many happy returns we’re almost overcome. First and most important, there’s the return of the Gallery at Avalon Island – not that it went anywhere, really, but the space in the historic building at the corner of Magnolia has been dark for too long. And there’s the return of Pat Greene’s curatorial talents; we’ve been waiting for his next play since last year’s wildly inventive Walk On By project filled the city with a brief and beautiful burst of art and music. Then there’s the work of Martha Lent and Dina Mack, familiar faces in the Orlando art scene who nevertheless continue to surprise (we hear Mack will exhibit an olfactory installation, which has to be a first). Photographs by Patricia Lois Nuss and Dawn Roe, text-based work by Emilie Finney, witty sculptures by Vanessa Diaz, video by Brittany Metz, prints by Rachel Simmons and paper-cuts by Lesley Silvia, emerging local artists all, will no doubt leave a mark. – Jessica Bryce Young
