Hay Is for Horses: Urban ReThink holds workshops in preparation for upcoming Broomstick Pony Derby

Posted By on Thu, Mar 21, 2013 at 2:39 PM

If Quidditch seemed too complicated to you – racing around on broomsticks while trying to catch the snitch – this broomstick-mounted game (without magic) might be easier to grasp.

Starting this week, Urban ReThink will hold a series of workshops where participants have the chance to create their own pony, on which they’ll mount as part of the Second Annual Broomstick Pony Derby on May 4 (which happens to also be Kentucky Derby Day).

The derby is a .131 and .262-mile gallop – no running with this piece of wood between your legs – down Central Boulevard in downtown Orlando. And seeing as they had a great turn out last year, this year’s race should be just as entertaining.

The workshops will be led by local artists, and will also include sessions with Heather Henson’s Ibex Puppetry.

And no worries if you're feeling out of shape, this derby isn’t just for athletes – everyone is welcome, including children. (My money is on them!).

Below you’ll find the schedule of workshops, which take place throughout March and April. The last one in May will also include a derby pre-party at Urban ReThink.

All workshops will be held at Urban ReThink (625 E. Central Blvd., 407-704-6895,
