Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 19-20 – Central Florida Scottish Highland Games 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, 8:45 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday Central Winds Park 1000 E. State Road 434, Winter Springs $12-$20

Have you ever seen a man throw a 180-pound tree trunk in a caber toss? How about heaving a 50-inch, 22-pound chunk of steel over the shoulder in the hammer throw? No, it’s not the World’s Strongest Man competition we’re talking about (albeit totally comparable), these are considered traditional Highland games in Scotland, and the annual feats of strength are returning to Winter Springs with the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games. The Scottish-American Society of Central Florida hosts this sprawling outdoor festival, complete with a Scottish shortbread baking competition, the “boulder boogie,” shopping vendors and archery ranges. It’s a fully authentic Scottish experience. And no worry if you’re less of an athlete and more of a spectator, there’s something for everyone in your clan – Scottish or otherwise – with kids games, Scottish country dancing, ever-flowing tap at the beer tent and a jampacked lineup of entertainment such as Medieval rock band Bardic Rose, pipes & drum sounds by Albannach and the step-dancing sisters known as Searson. – Aimee Vitek
