Wednesday, Nov. 28 – Stagnant Pools

with David Bazan

8 p.m.

The Social

54 N. Orange Ave.

Man, that Stagnant Pools set back in August at the Social kicked some real ass, didn’t it? Oh right, you weren’t there. Well, we were, and it did. And we basically prayed – in print – that the Indiana brothers would return, so everyone else could marvel at them, too. By some touring miracle, here they come again, only three months later. This time they open for David Bazan, playing Pedro the Lion’s Control, but you don’t need to be a conflicted Christian to dig them. They’re an overachieving, highly sonic two-piece band whose gorgeous rock sound churns together the noisy swerves of shoegaze with the dour, melodic nobility of post-punk. And their debut LP (Temporary Room) on top indie label Polyvinyl is one of the year’s best records. It’s music that’s big, textured and beautiful – and seriously recommended for fans of bands like Ride and Adorable. Don’t be the dummy that overlooks ’em twice. – Bao Le-Huu
