Wednesday, Nov. 14 – Cypress Hill

8 p.m.

The Plaza Live

425 N. Bumby Ave.

Hey, weed is legal in some places now, and if you want to thank anybody for it, go ahead and thank Cypress Hill. The first Cuban/Latino hip-hop artists to make it big (they were nominated for three Grammy awards in the ’90s and they won an MTV music award in 1994 for their single “Insane in the Brain”), Cypress Hill were also one of the first mainstream rap acts to make it big with songs that openly celebrated smoking dope. While that’s pretty much par for the course these days, songs with titles like “Hits From the Bong,” “Marijuana Locos” and “Stoned Is the Way of the Walk” were rather edgy back in their day and earned the group a loyal cult following that’s aging into the all-grown-up world now. So much so that, chances are, at least a few of the politicians who were responsible for seeing to it that pot is now legal in Colorado and Washington state were probably blaring “Insane in the Brain” and “I Ain’t Going Out Like That” in their dorm rooms while they smoked blunts. – Erin Sullivan
