Sometimes a pair is more than the sum of its parts. Sure, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy would have been stars even if they’d never hooked up, but would we remember a redheaded starlet and a Cuban bandleader if Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz hadn’t paired up to become the comedy powerhouse duo that they did? Likewise, bacon and chocolate are both pretty great, so it’s no surprise they’re spectacular together; but cauliflower and cocoa powder, fairly commonplace flavors, will astound you when combined. (Roast the first one, dust it with the second one.) Culinary proselytizing aside, this show at the Maitland Art Center might astound you as well. You’ll have to visit the opening of The Power of Two and see the art to form your own opinion as to whether these six local artists (real-life romantic couples Anna McCambridge-Thomas and Marabou Thomas, Martha Lent and Larry Moore, and Theresa and Joe Segal) are each stars in their own right or whether their personal relationships enrich and inform their respective work. Also relating to this show about relationships: Spatial Relationships drew together pairs of works from the museum’s permanent collection that interact with each other on a formal level, displaying unintentional connections of color, composition and scale. – Jessica Bryce Young
