Thursday, Aug. 16 – Doug Stanhope

7:30 p.m.

Orlando Improv

9101 International Drive

Kind of like that animated (or blitzed) barstool philosopher full of nihilistic bonhomie suited mostly for moments of blurry, abject despair, comedian Doug Stanhope has spent more than two decades on your left rattling on and on about everything that’s brilliantly wrong with the world. He should know: Stanhope has maintained a pop-cultural presence on TV’s far fringes, ranging from The Man Show to last season’s Louie, where he played a suicidal second-rate comedian affectionately referred to as “Shitty Fat Tits.” His charm – and his perpetually inevitable decline – lies in his darkly inebriated flirtations with death. Or, more specifically, the beer spittle he issues in the face of it. Unlike many of his colleagues (hello, Lisa Lampanelli), Stanhope’s audacious outbursts cut with a sense of purpose, even if that purpose is to prove that life is mostly comprised of little, ridiculous suicides. There is no comedy without tragedy! – Billy Manes
