Having Chicago’s Russian Circles come to town is always a pretty big deal – they’re not one of the premier names in heavy post-rock for nothing. (And their last album, Empros, was pretty monolithic.) But of particular note and intrigue on this bill is L.A. opener Marriages, a new band started by a couple members of the epic and equally esteemed post-rock group Red Sparowes who debuted this year with the enveloping mini-album Kitsune. Like the Sparowes, this new project helmed by Emma Ruth Rundle (vocals, guitar) and Greg Burns (bass, synthesizer) creates the kind of seismic, cinematic rock whose influences seem like the very forces of nature. Their musical tenor, however, is inkier and more brooding even though the feminine vocals give them an airy element. And their songs unlock the mood of an entire library of worlds. – Bao Le-Huu
