Thursday, July 19 – Man or Astro-man?

with the Ultras S/C

8 p.m.

The Social

54 N. Orange Ave.

Despite the retro-futurism of their whole schtick, it seems like Man or Astro-man? may well have been a fairly prescient underground rock band. During the ’90s, when it seemed like bands could be signed to major labels and given six-figure advances just for showing up, MOAM stayed dedicated not just to indie labels, but also to the indie aesthetic of touring their asses off. Of course, their crowd-friendly punk paeans to surf-rock and sci-fi make for pretty fantastic concerts, and MOAM became best-known for their incendiary and fun live shows. So, now that the band is two years’ worth of shows into their return from a 10-year hiatus, it’s only appropriate that they’re just now getting around to making a new record. Odds are they’ll be previewing tunes from that very record at this upcoming show, but really, it’s all about the Tesla coil and the spacesuits, right? – Jason Ferguson
