He’s been honored by everyone from Justin Timberlake, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and most recently President Obama, who notoriously crooned a few lines from Green’s all-time classic, “Let’s Stay Together,” at the Apollo Theater in January. But the music has always come first with the good Reverend, and that’s why you need to see the 66-year-old soul man while he can still physically handle the possession that overtakes him onstage. Green’s last proper album, 2008’s Blue Note release Lay It Down, was a remarkable return to secular form, and reviews from his current show seem to concur that he’s still got it live. Better yet, Green’s apparently found a way within himself to spiritually justify a mixed R&B-gospel set, so audiences get the best of both worlds. – Justin Strout
