Drum Corps International showdown tonight at the Florida Citrus Bowl

Posted By on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 9:00 AM

Saturday, June 23 – Drum Corps International 7:30 p.m. Florida Citrus Bowl 1610 W. Church St. $25-$40

Consider Fathom Events’ big-screen broadcast of last week’s Drum Corps International kickoff just a teaser, because tonight you’re in for the real show. A stacked lineup of five band corps from Marching Music’s Major League, hailing from Pennsylvania to Illinois to South Carolina to Texas, take center field at the Florida Citrus Bowl for a back-to-back musical showdown – some are comprised of up to 150 members. Among the high-school and college-aged musicians opening tonight’s show is Jacksonville-based Teal Sound, while standouts the Cavaliers, aka “The Green Machine,” tear up the turf with fast-and-furious color guard efforts. The headline spot goes to nine-time world champs (and the longest-running DCI group) the Cadets, widely revered not only for their impressive record, but also for notable public appearances, say, for instance, the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. With each corps vying for a roundup of season performance scores, you can expect a full-on choreographed brass battle – or drumbeat down, or flag-waving fight. You get the idea. – Aimee Vitek
