Fringe review: Blue and Tod - Too Drunk to Fringe

Posted By on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Dean Martin made a career out of acting drunk and happy. The charade -- he was actually drinking ice tea -- allowed him to make it look as if his artistry was carefree and unrehearsed. Tod Kimbro’s persona is drunk, happy, gay and debauched. It allows him to pass off his artistry as cool and detached. But make no mistake -- Martin was an artist of great talent and savvy; as is Kimbro, whose stage antics can never obscure his immense musical aptitude.

In his current show, Blue and Tod: Too Drunk to Fringe, he’s joined by babyBLUESTAR, another sly performer whose considerable performing skills are embedded in the persona of a precocious 4-year-old in fishnet stockings with an all-too-prescient sexuality. But make no mistake about this gal’s talent either – she’s got it in ample amounts.

While there are always elements of Kimbro’s shows that tread the line between hip and self-indulgent, he is sharp enough to always bring things back to basics with his solid vocals, his lush melodies, and his prickly lyrics. The best parts of Blue and Tod are when these two artists stop being their personae and simply harmonize together on some of Kimbro’s songs. That’s when their truest talents wash over us in waves of musical creativity. -- Al Krulick
