It’s an atypical type of ingenuity that fuels most folk artists, as once described by sculptor O.L. “Geech” Samuels: “I just start and let it turn out like it wants to.” There are no strict rules of composition, line or shape, yet most outsider artworks convey a story or portray a cultural experience. In this case, at today’s Folk Art and Craft Festival, it’s handcrafted cigar box guitars by Jim Mitchell, Haitian painter RaRa Kuyu’s colorful canvas, found-object works of Missionary Mary Proctor and Samuel’s woodcarvings. Adding to the free-spirit style of the day, Cajun zydeco ditties by the Porchdogs, Orisirisi African Folklore’s drum beats, barbecue plate lunches and a live pottery demo. Those with little ones head to the “Aztec Encounter and Musical Parade” workshop, while others looking to dig deeper culturally make way to the mobile Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum (a mock cargo truck with artifacts and historical displays). This day could turn out to be a masterpiece of a day, if you let it. – Aimee Vitek
