Pink Martini

7 p.m.

the Plaza Live

425 N. Bumby Ave.

Since the 1990s, this collective of a dozen or so multicultural, multi-instrumental “musical archeologists” have served as a kind of big-box store without the price fixing – whatever you’re looking for, they probably have it. That’s a big reason TV shows like The Sopranos, The West Wing and CSI: NY, not to mention feature films like Hitch and Mr. & Mrs. Smith have employed their sounds – from their then-omnipresent 2004 breakthrough album, Hang on Little Tomato, which integrated keen cinematic sensibility with sexy jazz, Latin and pop mastery to last year’s collection of 1960s cover songs fronted by Japanese pop legend Saori Yuki (who, sadly, is not listed on this bill), Pink Martini continues to confuse and delight with maddening precision. How precise? If you don’t hear their rendition of “Puff, the Magic Dragon” in a movie scene involving any combination of sex, drugs or grocery shopping sometime this year, then today’s music supervisors just aren’t doing their jobs. – Justin Strout
