About Dutch vocalist Jaap Blonk, we can’t say it better than the SF Weekly’s French Clements did two weeks ago after his San Fran appearance: “When idiots talk about wanting to de-fund the arts, Jaap Blonk is the kind of artist that they’re angry about. He makes wacky sounds with his mouth and throat and gets paid for it, which could mean that he’s un-American, certainly that he’s elitist.” Blonk’s Dada-esque whale sounds and toddler noises, amplified by multiple mics jammed into his face and leavened by forays into the poetry of Kurt Schwitters and Tristan Tzara, will be bookended by a performance equally as intense if not nearly so silly – bari sax maestro Fred Ho, a composer and performer who’s been called “the Chinese-American Charles Mingus.” Ho rarely performs in a club setting, focusing more on theater, opera and multimedia-performance composition, so this is an unusual opportunity to see his work unmediated by other interpreters. This is the inaugural entry of the Civic Minded 5’s new “One and One” series, in which two performers each perform solo: a double dip of experimental noise. Finding out whether the flavors will blend or just rub up against each other is part of the fun. – Jessica Bryce Young
