Orlando’s opera company may no longer be a going concern, but Orlando Philharmonic and Florida Opera Theatre have stepped in to fill the hole left in the arts scene when the Orlando Opera’s fat lady sang in 2009. Opera lovers can get their fix via “concert operas,” productions in which the orchestra is not just the accompaniment in the pit, but part of the main event onstage during the opera performance. This weekend, the Florida Opera Theatre and the Phil stage Rigoletto, an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, about a bitter hunchbacked court jester whose beautiful daughter falls in love with a manipulative duke. Florida Opera Theatre will provide the chorus, Orlando Phil will provide the musicians, and creative lighting will take the place of elaborate staged sets. We may not have a dedicated city opera company anymore, but Orlando will not go without its opera. – Erin Sullivan
