When Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski dropped their low-key debut album, 2008’s Three Rounds and a Sound, it seemed to come at the right time: Their hometown Portland, Ore., had seen a musical resurgence but wasn’t yet eye-rollingly obvious, and their balance between melancholy and hopefulness felt like a breath of fresh air. Since then, Dobrowski and Nebeker, collectively known as Blind Pilot, recruited a band, aired out their melodies and brought in the vibraphones and brass sections. Does it work? Not completely. New tracks like “Half Moon” and “Always” veer dangerously into Jason Mraz territory while the plodding “I Know” and the faux-jangly “Keep You Right” are just head-scratchers. But, as with most inherently good acts, they win us right back with tracks like “White Apple,” a wistful, bare-bones duet as heartbreaking as any last year. A friendly piece of advice: keep it stripped down and all will be well. – Justin Strout
