Christian Lander of snarkblog Stuff White People Like once wrote, “It’s no secret: White people want to be writers.

Every single white person harbors this dream.” (Lander, who is white, gained a multi-book publishing deal off his blog. No liar, he.) For those who’d like to go a more traditional route to authorship, the University of Central Florida launches a new event this year, the Florida Writers’ Conference, organized by students and faculty in the creative writing MFA program and members of the UCF literary journal, The Florida Review. There will be readings and signings from starry visiting authors Anthony Swofford (Jarhead), National Book Award winner Bob Shacochis and NPR’s Jacki Lyden (Daughter of the Queen of Sheba), as well as notable local poets, publishers, novelists and journalists leading panels and workshops, individual manuscript consultations and plenty of networking. Dust off your unfinished novel and register: You’ll be in sympathetic company. – Veronica Figueroa
