Thursday, Feb. 2Winter With the Writers: Carl Hiaasen

Kicking off Rollins’ well-established Winter With the Writers literary series is an evening with Carl Hiaasen, Florida’s homegrown maestro of outrage. Sometimes he mines a vein of restrained sarcasm, as in his columns for the Miami Herald, which simmer with a slow boil of anger at the greedy developers and ineffectual bureaucrats laying waste to the state; sometimes he shifts to hyperbolic mode, as in his cartoony portraits of brain-dead rednecks and corrupt pols (see U.S. Rep. David Lee Dilbeck, the pole-dancer-obsessed Florida congressman with Vaseline-filled cowboy boots from StripTease). Sometimes he channels the rage in a more constructive direction, as in his kids’ books, which infuse young readers with a desire to try to create change. As his lecture and reading Thursday night will demonstrate, however, there’s an abiding love of Florida beneath the anger, a hope that maybe, just maybe, all that outrage will inspire a popular turnaround that will save the state from itself. – Jessica Bryce Young
