Friday, Jan. 27The Bright Light Social Hour

It’s hard to take the Bright Light Social Hour entirely seriously, if only because it’s not entirely clear whether or not they do. There’s a sort of wink-and-a-nod detachment to their music, as if they’re letting you know that, as good as they are, they’re not really trying. This is just what they do for kicks, and if they actually played music, you wouldn’t know what to do with it. Fortunately, it’s also almost impossible not to enjoy yourself in the process. For all their ironically mustachioed, keytar-slinging, V-neck T-shirted hipsterisms, the band has some chops. Whether burning through an amped up take on disco-drenched post-punk, waxing anthemic like the best ’70s space-rock heroes, or emerging triumphantly out from under the soulful weight of every blues heavy hitter you know and love, there’s an undeniable contagion at work in their music and, in the moment, it feels like the most earnest stuff ever put to tape. Now there’s a puzzle for you. – Nicholas Hall
