Saturday, Dec. 31The Vignettes

Maybe it’s our inner masochist speaking, but this year, when that clock strikes midnight and we say farewell to the last 12 months of near-miss government shutdowns, nuclear plant meltdowns and the re-emergence of Newt Gingrich from his hobbit hole in Middle Earth, we’d frankly rather get punched in the face than kissed. Musically speaking, Stardust is ready to provide some metaphorical face-smashing tonight with a stacked bill of some of the hardest-hitting garage bands in existence. The Vignettes, a female duo from Memphis, Tenn., may have a low profile right now, but their boots-on-snow crunch and lo-fi melody-making are the stuff cult successes are made of. When they break out the cover songs, whether it’s something by Ben E. King or ’70s power-pop group the Wimps, it feels as if there is no history, only right now, and that’s exactly what we’re looking for tonight. – Justin Strout (with William Stull, Hot Hands, Key Bump, Vein Cranes, Raw Dealer, Fake Cum; 6 p.m. at Stardust Video & Coffee, 1842 E. Winter Park Road, 407-623-3393,, $5)
