Selection Reminder: Ken Russell's Tommy shows at Enzian!

Tuesday, Dec. 27Tommy

Airing exactly one month after the death of its director Ken Russell, the tempestuous mind behind Altered States and Crimes of Passion, Tommy is a fitting tribute. Based on the Who’s rock-opera album of the same name, it concerns the title character (played by Roger Daltrey, lead singer of the Who) as a man forced to repress the trauma of witnessing the death of his father by his mother’s lover (Oliver Reed). Struck “deaf, dumb and blind” by the experience, he becomes a master pinball player. When he defeats the reigning pinball wizard, played by Elton John, he becomes a messianic figure. Also starring Jack Nicholson, Tina Turner, Ann-Margret and Eric Clapton, Tommy is a gloriously crazed, somewhat inspired extravaganza that should be the perfect setting for an impromptu wake. – Justin Strout (9:30 p.m. at Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, 407-629-0054, enzian.org, $5)
