Selection Reminder: Cracker Christmas!

Posted By on Sat, Dec 3, 2011 at 8:00 AM

Saturday, Dec. 3-Sunday, Dec. 4Cracker Christmas

Let’s get this out of the way: Cracker Christmas, the county’s post- Civil-War-themed festival held at Fort Christmas, is not named after a racial slur. The term “cracker,” at least from a Florida historian’s perspective, refers to the cowboys who patrolled the lawless Florida of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, relying on the crack of their whips to herd cattle. (Cows could roam free in Florida until 1950 when the state’s fence law was passed.) This year will mark the 34th Cracker Christmas, and as in years prior, there will be demonstrations of the old-fashioned methods of weaving, spinning, blacksmithing, broom making and grinding sugar cane into liquid with a tractor-powered mill. Naturally, there will be copious amounts of barbecue, as well as swamp cabbage, gator meat, stew and biscuits.
