Selection Reminder: D.C. rapper Wale heads to the Beacham tonight!

Friday, Dec. 2Wale

Watching the video for D.C. rapper Wale’s latest single, “Tats On My Arm” is a disheartening experience for his fans. Where’s the guy who made indie kids around the nation fall for him by recording an entire mixtape inspired by Seinfeld, then followed that up by signing with Mark Ronson, performing at a D.C. LGBT festival and making a video inspired by (500) Days of Summer? And what’s he doing now? Getting tatted-up, smoked-up and rapping about bitches, hoes and G-codes. Et tu, Wale? It’s an understandable, if jarring new direction for an artist who, after tons of buildup, disappointed mightily with his rock-bottom-selling debut album, Attention Deficit in 2009. (Conspiracies still abound as to why it tanked so hard.) Now signed to Rick Ross’ bitches-’n-hoes-heavy label, Maybach Music, Wale’s finally at the top of the Billboard charts. Now that’s out of the way – and assuming he hasn’t completely bought into the gangsta-moved units correlation – we might see a return to the fan favorite Wale tonight. We’re crossing our fingers. – Justin Strout (with Black Cobain; 7 p.m. at the Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave.; $20-$35; 407-246-1419;
