New "Munsters" sews up Singer, will suck like Hoover

First the good news: That Bryan Fuller Munsters remake is going through at NBC. Now the bad news: That Bryan Fuller Munsters remake is going through at NBC.

Having not that long ago looked as dead as Grandpa’s many wives, the new series is going to pilot, and every bit of news that slips out about it just brings further cause for concern. The first (and maybe only) point of interest was the involvement of executive producer Fuller, whose track record for quirky fare like Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies made him at least an interesting choice to bring the most famous residents of 1313 Mockingbird Lane back to the airwaves. But word soon got out that Fuller’s “modern,” “edgier” take on the material would feature a more dangerous and bloodthirsty clan, with niece Marilyn the audience identification character amid a metaphoric examination of the embarrassment we all supposedly experience at the hands of our families. Bizarrely, True Blood was even cited as a touchstone. In other words, Fuller and company seemed determined to do the exact opposite of everything that made the original work, whether as satire or simply as entertainment. So it wasn’t truly saddening when the project seemed to be in limbo. Now it’s headed for the cameras again, and it’s picked up a hitchhiker: Bryan Singer, who will direct and executive-produce along with Fuller. Again, an interesting choice -- for the 1.5 seconds that go by until you remember that Singer hasn’t done a thing that was respectable since X2. Oh, and tucked away within Deadline’s coverage of the announcement is the horrifying little detail that the re-imagined series is not a half-hour comedy, but a one-hour “drama.” In the words of the poet: Darndarndarn! Seriously, I can’t imagine a more diligent and coordinated effort to turn a formerly FTW project into a WTF? It’s all particularly galling, as the TV industry is rife with people who could do a credible job of remaking The Munsters on its own terms and within its already appreciated parameters. Greg Garcia (My Name is Earl, Raising Hope) and Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) are two names that spring immediately to mind. And as long as I’m engaging in a running game of “Gifts I’ll never get,” I’ll throw in my lot with everybody else who comments on this story in any forum and declare my own pet choice for Herman: Neil Flynn, lately of The Middle and once the Janitor on Lawrence’s Scrubs. Take a good look at this shot and tell me you don’t see, um, Herman’s head:

No wonder I don’t work in TV. My ideas make too damn much sense.
