Afternoons With Archibald Leach

“I pretended to be somebody I wanted to be, and I finally became that person.” By the point the former acrobat and mime Archibald Leach tossed off that bon mot to a breathless reporter, he had transformed himself into Cary Grant, preternaturally well-groomed and devastatingly charming leading man. (Years later, George Clooney pretended to be somebody he wanted to be – Cary Grant – until finally he became that person.) To mark the 25th anniversary of the death of one of the most popular movie stars of all time, the downtown library is screening nine of his films: a perfect mix of screwball lunacy (Monkey Business, Bringing Up Baby, the utterly sublime Holiday), Hitchcock heist (To Catch a Thief, with Grace Kelly) and family-friendly rom-com (Houseboat, with Sophia Loren, her fires banked low). Check the website for complete showtimes. – Jessica Bryce Young (through Nov. 29 at Orlando Public Library, 101 E. Central Blvd.; free; 407-835-7320; ocls.info/carygrant)
