Friday, Nov. 18Southern Culture on the Skids

Never doubt Southern Culture on the Skids’ deep adoration for food and drink. The 26-year-old band blends rockabilly, punk, Americana, blues, surf and other genres into what lead singer-guitarist Rick Miller has called “toe-sucking geek rock.” Lyrically, the lighthearted act devotes most songs to depicting warts-and-all Southern characters and the amusing scenarios they find themselves in, but the North Carolina-bred band find their greatest inspiration in edibles. SCOTS regularly lob pieces of fried chicken into crowds during performances; titled an album Too Much Pork for Just One Fork; and has penned odes to banana pudding, corn liquor and eight-piece boxes of KFC. The group simultaneously mocks and revels in gleeful, unhealthy consumption. Even SCOTS’ website subscribes to this notion by showcasing recipes for indulgent treats such as apple juice pork ribs and turtle burgers – the latter an ingenious Frankensteinian concoction that must be Googled to be believed. – Reyan Ali (with Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three; 8 p.m. at the Social, 54 N. Orange Ave.; $13-$15; 407-246-1419; thesocial.org)
